Eating Out: Hard Times Cafe, Alexandria VA

We’re already enjoying the food on this trip, and it’s barely Day 1! We found the Hard Times Cafe by serendipity, and it was meant to be. I claimed not to be hungry, or to want chilli (the speciality) until we were given out taster platter of four different chillies: all good.

I went for the Cincinnati chilli, which had a sweeter blend of spices, including cinnamon. I had a bowl with beans and a side salad – and it came with the most delicious corn bread. Papa had his chilli on top of corn bread, with cheese and sour cream on top, and it looked immense!

The Cafe had a good, down-to-earth atmosphere, and was frequented by locals – always a good sign. Recommended if you’re ever in Old Alexandria.
