Desserts in the park at Sun Fest

London is the festival capital of Canada! And the weekend of our trip is was Sun Fest. As well as some great music there were lots of craft, clothes and gift stalls – and lots of food too!

First up we had freshly squeezed lemonade, made and served from a stand that looks like a lemon. Refreshing, delicious, and amusing!

We were treated to the favourite food stall desserts of our two hosts:

  • churros are tubes of dough, deep fried. They are sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar, and can be filled with chocolate or caramel syrup.
  • funnel cake is a large round cake made of doughnut dough, shaped or dropped into what looks like lots of small pieces all stuck together (this description makes sense if you can see it!). Ours was topped with strawberry sauce and ice cream.

A delicious way to end the evening…

My using discovery of the evening was that Canadians are now making, selling and eating the deep fried Mars bar! After years of being mocked by health-conscious international friends about the rubbish the Scots eat, and the perplexity of deep frying a Mars bar, I can now rejoice that Canada has joined us with the dfMb. It’s serve on a stick, which is definitely an improvement on how it’s served in Scotland! They have deep fried cheesecake in Canada too – the mind boggles as to how that works!
